YMCA International Programs
The smallest and least known YMCA program area is International Programming. Our International programs consist of education and information for members and participants on world issues, and our partnership with the Khartoum YMCA in Sudan.
Sudan is the largest country in Africa, bordering on Egypt and Ethiopia. the population of 40 million people are largely Muslim, and the country has been ravaged by dictatorial military rule and civil war for the past twenty years. Agriculture is the principal industry although Sudan is constantly challenged by poverty, famine and drought. A peace agreement is currently in place and United Nations peace-keeping forces will begin monitoring in 2007
The Khartoum YMCA
YMCA Sudbury has had a relationship with the Khartoum YMCA for more than 20 years. YMCA Sudbury and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) have a three year agreement to fund programming at the Khartoum YMCA. A small amount of money from YMCA Sudbury and the YMCA's in Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins and North Bay is leveraged by CIDA into a very large amount of Sudanese dollars. With this money the Khartoum YMCA offers skills development training for YMCA members. Each year the Khartoum YMCA will train 800 adults, 400 young adults, and 400 youth in vocational skills.
