From November 18th, to November 25th, 2017 the YMCA will be celebrating Peace Week throughout the YMCA. The Peace Week tagline this year is “Building Community, Act for Peace.”
This week the YMCA acknowledges Peace as dynamic presence, more than the absence of violence and conflict. Peace is the presence of conditions like fairness, inclusion, empathy, security and respect for diversity. We believe that “the responsibility for peace begins with each person, and extends to relationships with family and friends, neighbourhoods and the broader global community.”
The Sault Ste. Marie YMCA invites the community to participate in the 4th annual “Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes” event. This event is very easy. You can do it alone, or do it with a group of friends and co-workers. Simply wear mismatched shoes (for example, switch with another person) and take a picture and send it to Carly Smith email@example.com.
A special highlight of this week is the presentation of YMCA Peace Medallions to individuals or groups who, without any special resources, demonstrate a commitment to the values of PEACE through contributions made within their local, national or global community. Peacemakers are recognized for promoting and inspiring
“…Peace has many dimensions. It is not only a state of relationships among nations. We cannot expect to live in a world of peace if we are unable to live in peace with those close to us – even those who differ from us….The responsibility for peace begins with each person, in relationship with family and friends, and extends to community life and national activities…”
