At the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA ChildCare Centre, you may see a group of children, pouring and splashing water at the sensory table; there may be one child animatedly "reading" a story to a group of dolls; and on the carpet nearby, children wearing construction hats, and others driving cars and trucks around some carefully created block structures, deep in conversation. Although all of these children are involved in very different activities, they have one very important thing in common... They are each learning through play.

The Sault Ste. Marie YMCA has introduced the YMCA Playing to Learn Curriculum. YMCA Playing to Learn is a curriculum that addresses the training and continuing education of early childhood educators employed by the YMCA, and delivers on our promise to continuously imporve the quality of programs and services provided to children.

We believe that YMCA Playing to Learn is the best approach to ensure a child’s continued enthusiasm and capacity for life - long learning. It provides an understanding of the way play can offer the foundation for learning to read and write, and for learning mathematics, science and technology. It provides early childhood educators with the skills to prepare spaces that are more conductive to learning, and the best practices to encourage quality learning experiences.
